3 Remodeling Recommendations You Won’t Hear From Most Contractors

Unforeseen circumstances during a home remodeling project may cause it to become more complex than you initially thought. But not all contractors will tell you about these unexpected factors, which may add to the homeowner’s uncertainty. As you start planning a bath or kitchen remodeling project, you’ll need to consider the type of contractor you want to hire. You’ll be better off selecting someone who will give a clear and unfiltered idea of what you should expect once your project is underway.

In fact, the contractors may offer you the following pieces of advice:

1. “Your project may take longer than expected.” The start and completion date of a remodeling project is typically included in the contract. But you shouldn’t expect the schedule to be followed to the letter. Previously undiscovered issues may arise, and construction work that should only take a few days can stretch out to weeks. An extended remodeling timeline occurs more often than you think. You’ll need to calmly deal with this change if or when it comes.

2. “Unwelcome surprises aren’t uncommon, so it’s best to prepare for them.” There may be cases where additional repair work will be required before your remodeling project can proceed. Extra repairs, of course, usually means extra costs. That’s why you should set aside a budget for contingencies to ensure you’ll remain on budget and avoid even more delays in your renovation. An emergency budget is especially crucial when updating an older home or tackling historic restorations

3. “Talk to us about your ultimate goal.” Your remodeling contractor knows best, sure, but whether or not you’ll actually be fully satisfied with the results is down to you. This is why it’s important to discuss your specific wants and needs with your remodelers. Giving them an idea of your goals about the project allows them to create the design solution that’s tailored to meet them. At Cottage Industries, Inc, for example, we always encourage our clients to be vocal about the things they want and need. When clear and effective communication is achieved, ensuring that your completed project matches exactly with your remodeling vision becomes worry-free.
