6 Simple Rules of Classic Kitchen Design

The kitchen is more than just a place for preparing meals. It’s considered the heart of a home because it’s where families bond and create lasting memories. You spend a lot of time in this room, so you want it to be stylish and functional.

Here are six simple rules of classic kitchen design.

1. Implement the Kitchen Work Triangle

At the heart of every efficient kitchen design lies the work triangle concept. The vertices of the triangles, the sink, refrigerator and cooktop are placed within 20 feet of each other. This setup streamlines your movements, making food preparation and cleanup easier.

2. Ensure Proper Dishwasher and Sink Placement

Having your dishwasher and sink in proximity can help with the efficiency of the work triangle. Placing these elements next to each other simplifies the workflow of loading and unloading dishes. It can also reduce the risks of navigating a busy kitchen with fragile items.

3. Choose the Right Countertop Material

Countertops provide a space for prepping ingredients, plating meals and keeping small appliances. Traditional or classic kitchens usually have countertops made from natural materials, such as granite and butcher block. Quartz with a marble look is another popular countertop option for these spaces.

4. Consider Seating

Seating is another crucial element in a classic kitchen design. You can set up a table within the room or have your island double as a dining spot. Moreover, your seating arrangement can influence your kitchen’s overall look and flow. Select chairs or stools that complement your space’s architectural details.

5. Prioritize Safety

Regardless of room, safety should always be a priority. Good lighting can increase visibility and reduce the risk of accidents like slips and falls. Your fire extinguishers should always be readily accessible. Avoid having fabric materials near cooktops, and ensure counters don’t have sharp edges.

6. Maintain Cohesion

All elements of your kitchen should go well with each other. It doesn’t mean having everything in the same material or color. Combining complementing hues, textures and decor can help you create a timeless and personal space.
